SAP StreamWork hopes to boost sales with OpenSocial

SAP has added support for programming standards guaranteed by Google OpenSocial for social applications to its collaboration software StreamWork, the company announced Wednesday.

Software that uses the API (application programming interface) of OpenSocial users may be served through StreamWork "application catalog tools," according to a statement.

OpenSocial-enabled applications are already available, including mind mapping from CS Odessa and MindMeister; appointment scheduling service Doodle; Google Translate; and software development and collaboration tools by Atlassian, SAP said.

StreamWork, which was launched last year, has been dubbed a "virtual war room," which serves as a place where it is user groups — employees, customers, partners, or a mix--can brainstorm and solve problems.

By aggressively pursuing integration with third-party applications, SAP StreamWork can extend the reach and importance, in view of an observer.

"I think you can look this way. StreamWork is a canvas for a painting, "said analyst Ray Wang, CEO of constellation. "OpenSocial gives many portraits for display on the canvas itself."

SAP is looking for partner applications based on feedback from users, said Holly StreamWork Simmons, senior marketing manager on demand. Sense to SAP StreamWork extend to types of related software products to customers are already using, he added.

Even their integration with StreamWork cuts on what users need to switch between applications, Simmons said.

Additional tools are available from OpenSocial are at no extra charge to customers, as many sellers have already a selling model "freemium," he said. However, paid versions are available, he said.

An Edition based StreamWork is available free of charge. Professional Edition starts at US $ 9 per user per month and adds features like advanced administration. Enterprise Edition pricing starts at $ 195 per user per year in the USA and enhanced security, monitoring and provisioning. For prices in other countries, customers must contact SAP, according to its website.

Like any supplier, SAP had to face a challenge of cracking a crowded market populated by hordes of offers of collaboration-related latest as well as widely adopted platforms such as Microsoft SharePoint.

And I stumbled attempts to high profile generation tools. Citing the lack of adoption, in August Google stopped development on its much-ballyhooed wave application which had integrated StreamWork.

Simmons has refused to reveal how many, in the production of paying customers StreamWork scored so far. But sales are "going really well," he said. Now, most customers are small and medium-sized enterprises, he said.

A typical customer might be a small consulting company that wants to strategize and share documents with clients thousands of miles away, Simmons said.

Large enterprises are voicing "different types of requests" when it comes to pain points, he said. On the one hand, they want to help employees work more effectively with the software that they already have.

The enterprise edition was released only in the month of December, so SAP is "just ramping up in terms of sales," he said.

SAP has also implemented internally, business tool, Simmons said.

While eager to grow the community of partners of SAP StreamWork, has ambitious development plans of its own.

Customers should expect to see continued work to integrate with SAP StreamWork range of business software, Simmons said. "People want to use this in a business context. We do not try to create another suite of productivity. "

Verizon iPhone 4 sales Underwhelm, report says

Consumer demand for a Verizon iPhone 4 can be less enthusiastic than first expected. Blog Tech Boy Genius Report is reporting that iPhone first week 4 sales do not meet the expectations of Apple and Verizon Wireless.

Citing unnamed sources at Apple, BGR sent units total sales allegedly by five Apple stores, including two positions "very, very prominent". The numbers show iPhone Verizon Wireless and AT&T 4 Verizon sales during the first five days iPhone availability (Thursday, 10 February):

Thursday: Verizon = 909, AT&T = 539

Friday: Verizon = 916, AT&T = 680

Saturday: Verizon = 660, AT&T = 471

Sunday: Verizon = 796, AT&T = 701

Monday: Verizon = 711, AT&T = 618

The figures indicate a rush early sales of iPhone 4 Verizon that quickly dissipated. Sunday, 13 February, Verizon iPhone sales were only slightly higher than that of AT&T. online pre-orders for iPhone Verizon 4 totaled approximately 550,000 units, BGR reports.

If the consumer response to the iPhone Verizon is pretty disappointing, what is the most likely reason? You can take your pick of possible explanations, including a period of cold through the eastern half of the United States that has reduced foot traffic to brick and Malta positions at Apple, or how many sane Verizon iPhone online preorders.

Or maybe iPhone enthusiasts are more experienced and more menial. Many have probably heard that the iPhone 5 will arrive this summer. Revelation! It is smarter to wait a couple of months and get the latest iPhone Verizon (assuming it is available), rather than commit to a two-year contract with last year's model.

Oh, one other interesting tidbit from BGR on who bought iPhone Verizon so far: 30 percent were Android users; 25% migrated from BlackBerry; and only 14% were AT&T iPhone owners. The rest didn't have a smartphone or other mobile phone or simply didn't say.

Release date of Verizon iPhone 5 cause "poor" sales of Apple?

By Richi Jennings. 14 February 2011.

Verizon iPhone hasn't sold well, some say. It is because people are waiting for the release date of Apple's iPhone or are misleading perceptions? In IT Blogwatch, bloggers are angels pinhead-balancing.

Your humble blogwatcher curated by these bits bloggy for your entertainment. Not to mention the real heroes ...
(AAPL) (VZ) (VOD)

Harry McCracken start a rumor:

I went to my local Apple Store [Friday] night, on the heels of the release yesterday of Verizon iPhone 4. ... I commented on the lack of insanity induced by Verizon to a salesguy. "We surprised ourselves," he said. ... There are supposed to be hordes of people willing to show up at dawn to crack and wait for hours. ... Everyone knows that. But this time, it didn't happen. ... Because the degree of normality? Some theories ...
...
People are waiting for the iPhone 5. ... You might decide to bide your time a few months to see what Apple releases this summer. ... The years of accumulation for the release of Verizon iPhone 4 make a wait of only a few months more ... look like anything.

Scot Finnie agrees, adding additional possibilities:

First, the next version of iPhone should be published this year (probably this summer). ... And there are more problems. Verizon iPhone does not support voice and data operations simultaneously. Also, Android-based Smartphone from the competition is fierce, and is evolving rapidly.
...
The latest version of the iPhone 4 has improved slightly, due to its antenna design, and you're going to love the connection strength and reliability. If you've been hankering for an iPhone but they refused to go with AT&T--and do not want to wait for the next iPhone 5--Verizon iPhone 4 is the best choice.

Michael Fowlkes but thinks the lines of "might be misleading":

Some analysts had expected to see some long lines, but did not materialize, creating the impression that the launch was less successful. ... In most cities there were lines at all! How could it be? ... A huge number of customers had already pre-ordered your iPhone Verizon to avoid waiting in long lines and seems to have worked perfectly.
...
Verizon has not released its sales figures for February 3, but it stated that it was the "most successful sales in the first day in the history of the company."... It has been estimated that Verizon probably sold about one million iPhone during the launch, with many more sales coming on the horizon. ... Extreme cold is probably required to House some potential buyers. ... There are also many buyers out there that will be enough to hold off and wait for a new iPhone hit the market ... in July.

Andrew Lipsman puckers:

On February 3, 2011, Verizon and Apple began accepting pre-orders. ... That day alone, millions of people visited verizonwireless.com, with 38% visiting the pre-order page for Verizon iPhone. Visitors to the pre-order page, 39% actually complete a transaction pre-order – an amazing conversion rate.

And Greg Sterling finds some other data:

In little over 48 hours since its launch the Verizon iPhone in the United States is responsible for 3.6% of the traffic that is seeing Chitika on its network. ... Research Director Dan Ruby has estimated that the traffic was coming from about 900 K Verizon iPhones.
...
It's hard to know what the "inside baseball" voices and cover tech permeates the public consciousness. But it seems that some people are waiting for the next iPhone. Certainly I am not going to buy an iPhone 4 on Verizon when iPhone 5 probably is coming in a few months.

But Thompsondoesn't seem exactly fond of methodology of Ruby:

The methodology is superior to that of iPad counter [you] did last year? Because what sucked.

And finally ...
