Watson as you pass the danger, but shows weakness (NewsFactor)

On the second day of his appearance in TV SHOW Jeopardy, IBM Watson supercomputer devastated its human opponents. But even Watson, with 90 IBM Power 750 servers, have weak points.

On Tuesday, the world's smartest Computer blew past his opponents based on carbon, Ken Jennings samples and Brad Rutter. At the conclusion of the evening, the computer has racked up $ 35,734 while Rutter had $ 10,400 $ 4800 and Jennings. At the end of Monday's game, Watson was linked with Rutter $ 5,000 each, with Jennings in 2000 dollars. The game ends Wednesday.

Is fundamentally different from humans

The winner gets $ 1 million. As Watson is not designed for shopping, IBM will donate the prize to charity if he wins his creation. The two men said they'll donate half if they manage to pull off on Wednesday.

Eric Nyberg, Carnegie Mellon University Professor of computer science who led a CMU team that helped IBM, commented that Watson's answers "fundamentally different" from human beings. For example, a competitor can buzz and takes few seconds to respond, while Watson will buzz only when you have a high degree of confidence that the answer is correct. Watson may develop and evaluate two million pages of information in three seconds. But if the question is short, Watson is a disadvantage, because it takes three seconds to complete on every issue.

Most difficult questions can throw out Watson. In a brief moment of happiness for human whiffed badly partisans, Watson on final Jeopardy Tuesday. The category was the city of United States, and the symptom response was: "largest airport of the city is named after a hero of World War II; the second largest, for a battle of World War II. " The correct answer was "what is Chicago?" Both humans responded correctly. Watson, who never spent much time in airports, much less U.S. ones, replied "what is the Toronto?"

On his blog smarter planet, IBM David Ferruci, project manager, Watson was quoted as saying that the computer had learned the names of the category "only weakly suggest the type of answer that is expected and, therefore, the machine would despise their meanings." Furthermore, he noted, there are cities in the United States called Toronto and Toronto, Canada has an American League baseball team.

Career Post-Jeopardy Watson

But the good news for Terminator-wannabes is that Watson is continuously learning how categories work in danger. He also learned to be wary of betting. As his level of confidence for the final Jeopardy question of Tuesday was low, it only bet $ 947 gain riled.

On the blog of IBM, IBM Steven Hamm noticed some of the uses for intelligence Watson after calm from the fame of danger. In medicine, he predicted, "a patient a doctor can describe a certain symptom or a high level of pain, which on the surface it may seem like an important clue to the cause of the noise." But could discover Watson, sifting through and its huge repository of data, another symptom might be the real key for diagnosis of weighing.

Other applications might include sifting through case law relevant to find previous, helping governments examine the requests from clients or social services, help intelligence agencies in the analysis of information flows, or reach out to the call center.

Sandy Bridge error shows how Intel is important

It escaped your notice that Sandy Bridge processor microarchitecture Intel has made an impact. A look at our PC reviews will soon show that the performance of your PC by Sandy Bridge are head and shoulders above the rest.

Alas, that's not the whole story: in the weeks of launch Sandy Bridge, Intel announced it had found a design flaw in her series 6 ' Cougar Point's chipset, forcing a warning to be issued. You can find out exactly what happened and what you should do if you intend to buy a PC, in our history: Intel Sandy Bridge recall: what you need to know.

Suffice it to say that it is an error of $ 1 billion and one that Intel will struggle to survive. It'll take at least three years for the dust to settle, but perversely, recall and its fallout illustrate where Intel dominates the PC industry.

There is nothing wrong with AMD, of course, and the growth of mobile computing means companies as arm grow increasingly important. But Intel is the single most important hardware player in the PC market, and Sandy Bridge is an update of the game change.

Even after Intel pulled ahead its date of supply Cougar point, the first OEM will receive sufficient boards updated is the end of March. If suppliers had decided not to sell PCs with contaminated chipsets, there would be a six-week period where could be sold only obsolete Intel or AMD PCs. At the same time, PC manufacturers ought to remind all laptops and PCs have got flogged, replace motherboards and send them back. Intel may have to pay the Bill at the end, but in the medium term would be disastrous.

Given Intel's market share and profit margins thinner bear PC OEMs, only the largest of the latter could survive this crisis. It is no exaggeration to suggest that the existence of independent UK computer industry was threatened by lack of simple design of Intel.

Make care buying public, about the processor in your PC? Not directly, perhaps, but a dealer UK recently told me that it is much harder to sell a PC that does not carry the Intel branding-largely because of the all-pervasive advertising it undertakes and five-note ear-worm contains its TV ads.

If you ask me for buying tips I recommend a PC model or brand rarely, but remember what specific to search for. In today's market, which typically means an Intel processor.

Windows 8 will run on ARM processors, System-on-a-chip and mobile, as well as Intel and AMD chips. This is part of the Microsoft way of spreading the risk of having a single partner, over-influential hardware. Because, as the company worked a long time ago, the best way to make a fortune in the PC does not make the PC, but to design the public part of a PC you recognize and demand every time.

Microsoft shows WP7 integration with Xbox Kinect

At Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Microsoft unveiled not only what was coming to Windows Phone 7 this year, but Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer decided it was time to raise the curtain on a Technology Preview featuring WP7 and Kinect Xbox. Microsoft Game Studios showed off two women using their phones Windows to shoot balls in the game ball Rally that a man was playing on Kinect.

In the video, it is clear that the console and the phone are communicating real-time, probably on Wi-Fi. This is not only motion sensing Kinect brought to the phone; This is input from the mobile phone player is added to a game of Kinect, turning your phone into an auxiliary controller. In other words, some kind of multiplayer platforms in the world Microsoft is coming:

Microsoft has sold 8 million Kinect units in 60 days. Wp7 sales weren't nearly as good, but if this type of game is collected, we would bet that the two will help each other. Wp7 is attractive for players already as it comes with the integration of Xbox Live, but what you see above is a completely different ball game (excuse the pun).

"The technology shown in the video is real and is an example of the types of experiences we'll be bringing to market," said a spokesman for Microsoft in a statement. "We remain committed to build a network that connects to your friends and entertainment in innovative ways. This is just one example of what's possible as we explore new ways to interact with our technology. At this time, we discuss specific experiences aren t we ll be bid or a timeline of product, but we look forward to sharing more in the future. "
