Cyber criminals find new goals

23 February 2011, Last updated at 16: 39 GMT Visiting respectable sites still may involve malware is downloaded to users ' computers, the percentage of Web sites hosting malware secretly reached one in 3,000 according to security firm Kaspersky.

It found an increase in the number of web-based attacks in 2010, with more than 580 million accidents recorded.

Risk is no longer focused on sites with illegal content such as pirated movies and music, says the report.

Instead, the criminals were increasingly using legitimate sites, like shopping and online games.

Malware writers target the vulnerable web server, with the owners often unaware of the attack, said Ram Herkanaidu, senior security research at Kaspersky Lab.

"They put a piece of Java code, for example, on a website and it is difficult to see scramble as well.

"The Java code is executed when you visit the site and redirects the user to malicious software," he said.

Dodgy websites

"Previously you could avoid these attacks do not visit dodgy websites.

Today malware writers are legitimate ones, "added Mr Herkanaidu.

Kaspersky's figures are based on reports from customers that have joined its network security.

The increase in incidents of attacks on web exceeded the number of new members in 2010, indicating the growing threat, said Mr. Herkanaidu.

"Has become cyber crooks attack of choice," he said.

The threat of cyber crime is taken increasingly seriously by government officials.

Last week, the British Government published figures estimated that cybercrime costs the economy £ 27 billion a year.

Earlier this month, researchers from the European Union said that nearly a third of users computer has been infected by malware in recent years.
