Your brain on cell phones: have unknown effects, consequences

24/02/11 11: 28 AM PT cell phone radiation increases brain activity, according to new research, but if this is evil, neutral or maybe even good again is anyone's guess. Those worried about cell phones and health counsel caution. "Most people are clueless about how cell phones work," says Devra Lee Davis on environmental health Trust. "Basically, they are bi-directional radio microwaves that use the same frequencies as a microwave oven. You can boil water in a microwave oven in two minutes. "

A problem that periodically makes its way into the public discourse--the impact and possible health hazards arising from the use of mobile ubiquitous and the development of the brain--is revisited thanks to a scientific study recently published in The Journal of The American Medical Association.

However, rather than offering any definitive answers, new research, led by Nora d. Volkow National Institutes of Health, raises more questions. Volkow and colleagues found that 50 minutes of use of the phone has been associated with higher cerebral glucose metabolism--an indicator of brain activity--the region closest to the phone's antenna. This means it is not clear.

The research team was not aware of the controversies surrounding health mobile phones, particularly the concern that exposure to electromagnetic fields RF modulated devices may have carcinogenic effects.

Epidemiologic studies of association between mobile phone use and the prevalence of brain tumors have been inconsistent, underlined in their report, with some but not all, showing the increased risk. In short, this issue was not resolved.

The point of this study, however, that was conducted at the end of 2009, was to assess whether exposure to interested regional business cellphone in the human brain. Mobile phones were placed on the left and right ears of 47 participants, and brain imaging using Positron Emission Tomography with (18F) with injection--used to measure the glucose metabolism of the brain--was performed twice.

The first scan was done with the right mobile enabled, and the silent sound for 50 minutes--i.e. "on condition"--and the second was done with two mobile phones switched off, i.e. to "off". The scans were then compared to assess the effect of the use of mobile phones on brain glucose metabolism.

It differed in the whole brain metabolism in and outside conditions. However, there were significant regional effects, according to the authors of the study. Metabolism of brain region closest to the antenna--the bark Orbitofrontale and temporal pole--was significantly higher, about 7 percent, when the phone was on than when it is turned off.

"These results provide evidence that the human brain is sensitive to the effects of RF-Emf from acute exposures cellphone," the status of researchers in their report. "However, these results provide no information of their relevance with regard to the potential carcinogenic effects (or in the absence of such effects) from chronic use phone".

While the short-term results of mobile phone use might be safe, long-term concerns Devra Lee Davis, PhD, MPH, President and founder of the environmental health Trust and author of disconnect: the truth about cell phone radiation, what the industry has made to hide, and how to protect your family.

"The glucose is the main fuel of the brain," Davis told TechNewsWorld.

Essentially, the study found that in areas has reached the cellular signal, there was an increase of glucose. In other words, the cellphone radiation affected their brains.

Maybe for a healthy adult, wouldn't the effect, but patients with health problems of the brain such as Parkinson's or veterans with brain injuries should be very careful of that phone use, said Davis, as they should, children and adolescents, whose skulls are thinner and the developing world.

"Most people are clueless about the work of mobile phones," he said. "Basically, they are bi-directional radio microwaves that use the same frequencies as a microwave oven. You can boil water in a microwave oven in two minutes. "

Studio plus the complete ramifications of cellphone use become clear, added Davis.

Meanwhile, people should take precautions, starting with healthy lifestyle habits including using earphones instead of holding devices next to the body and sleep in the dark, he suggested.

Mobile phones should be kept away from the body in General, Davis recommended. "Won't help much to use headphones if you keep your phone in your Pocket".
